Complex Memories of You
To a dad who fell short
of safety, love, and security.
You failed to offer your support.
Your death triggers my insecurity.
Tomorrow is Father’s Day.
My emotions are broken and torn.
Memories I try to keep at bay,
make it impossible for me to mourn.
Your grave now holds a bucket of pain.
You caused my scars that won’t fade away.
What did you hope to gain?
From your need for power, you betray.
Your idea of love was twisted and distorted.
It was nothing but control causing shame.
The image of God, you contorted.
His loving kindness, I reclaim.
I refuse to believe the lies you taught,
The lies you showed me I was nothing.
Replacing fear with loving thought,
Your message of shame, I am crushing.
