This quote from Rebecca Wells both rang true for me, as well as triggered some negative emotions in me.
When I was a teenager and showing signs of mental health issues, such as severe depression and suicide ideation, my dad didn’t believe in psychiatric treatment or therapy. He called it, “psycho babble.”
No matter how much I said I needed help or told him I wanted to die, his answer was always, “This too shall pass,” but it didn’t pass. It resulted in one of many suicide attempts. So, those words have a negative connotation for me.
I believe sometimes things will only get better with the right kind of help. So, with individuals who don’t struggle with mental illness, this quote is probably true, and I believe it is true for people with mental illness as well with the right kind of help.
It wasn’t just a phase of my adolescence. When I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital at 18 years old, I was diagnosed with bipolar , and later in life, with dissociative identity disorder. It wasn’t a phase.
However, I am a lot more stable than I have ever been since I have been getting the right kind of help, and I can now say to myself during tough times that this too shall pass.
So, I both agree with this quote and disagree with it. Under the right conditions, it is very true that tough times will pass.
I do believe the first part of this quote that life is short. I am now 46 years old and it feels like I should still be in my 20s or early 30th. I can’t believe how time has flown by and my interpretation of life is wide is we have numerous choices in which our life can go, so our options are wide.
I have made a lot of bad choices in my life that I regret, and feel like I wasted many years.
However, I can’t let that be my focus or I might not see the good things right in front of me.
These quotes just causes me to think about things. What I am writing right now are just my thoughts that it stirred. You may have different thoughts and feelings about this quote or you might not even think about your thoughts about it.
I just wanted to share the thoughts that this quote brought to me, personally. You may or may not resonate with it.
