I am taking a writing course that just began on Monday of this week. The assignment was to create a very detailed scene that would evoke an emotional experience for your reader. I couldn’t think about a scene other than the experience I am having right now, so I chose to practice with this scene. It’s just a scene, not a story, but I wanted to share my practice assignment.
Practice Scene 1:
The iron bars surrounded by a wooden frame made the bed feel like it was ready to collapse. I tried hard to slither under the covers, trying not to make the antique frames hit the wall, waking up Mother in the next room. I was wide awake, my mind still racing from the hustle and bustle of the day. The only lights on within the house were in my room. I couldn’t possibly sleep even though it was almost midnight.
My recently groomed dog, just slightly bigger than a cat with whitish brown hair, was already dreaming. His muffled, frantic barks said to me that something exciting was happening. Maybe he was chasing a cat? Or like the excitement he always feels, making him appear vicious when another dog was approaching on a walk. You would never guess that he simply wanted to play by the ferocious sounds that bellowed out of him. I had no clue what exciting moment was happening in his dream, but those quiet barks brought a smile to my face.
