Hello, everyone. I am taking a writing course and am sharing some of the assignments I have on my blog. This assignment is about creating an emotional experience for readers. It had three parts. One was to pick a place to sit and describe five things about the environment. The following two parts were to create two different emotions describing that same place. So, this is what I did…

Observation:

  1. I am sitting on my bed with my laptop on my lap desk.
  2. The bed is cushy and soft, and the pillows are bunched up behind me.
  3. My birds are chirping loudly.
  4. I have a YouTube video playing pretty music with images of nature scenes.
  5. I have incense burning, which is the smell of rain.

Emotion One:

My soft and inviting comforter, a mix of midnight blue and bright sky colors, supports my body as the light-feathered pillows, bunched up together, rest against my back like a soft white cloud. I lean back, taking in the sweet fragrance of rain from burning incense. My lap is covered with a smooth wooden laptop, which rests above it, supported by black metal legs. My words become alive while my fingers type each word with care. The pleasant sounds of my parakeets chirping, like listening to praise and worship on a Sunday morning service, mixed with the occasional glance at my TV, showing autumn leaves falling off the trees like rain from the sky. My spirit is soothed by the music of the scene, like the songs of my birds to my ears. The sound of the Birds with the Melody of the Music is like a well-played musical.

Emotion Two:

The bed’s instability feels like riding an unsteady horse. The legs holding my wooden lap desk tilt to one side, threatening to knock my laptop’s mouse off to the floor—my smashed pillows against my back cause a kink in my neck. The uneven laptop makes typing difficult with shaking, trembling hands. The chirping of my parakeets makes it difficult to enjoy listening to music accompanied by scenes of autumn trees on my TV.  The two noises blend like being in a crowded room, unable to make out one conversation. The incense burning makes my allergies flare, like leaving the burner on too long, dissolving the water in the teapot that fails to bring relief to my unsteady nerves.
