What activities do you lose yourself in?
Sometimes I fall into a tunnel where hours disappear—writing is the clearest example. It hooks me like a mental addiction: I’ll get so absorbed that I forget to eat, skip small responsibilities, and drift away from the rhythms of daily life. Painting does the same for me; when I’m mixing color and working on a piece I can lose track of time and forget basic needs until I come up gasping for water. Both feel like stepping into a safe, necessary other world where the rest of life pauses so I can be fully present with whatever I’m making. Lately I’m trying to come back more often—I set gentle break reminders on my Alexa to eat a snack, sip tea, and check on Barkley and the kittens so creativity doesn’t empty my spoons.
