What’s something most people don’t understand?

Something most people don’t understand is dissociative identity disorder. A lot of people think they know what DID is, but most of that is based on TV and movies, and those portrayals are usually pretty dramatic and not very accurate. In my real life with DID, it’s a lot quieter and less obvious. I don’t have huge, theatrical switches where my whole personality suddenly changes in front of everyone. Instead, like many people with DID, I’ve learned how to hide it and blend in so most people have no idea what’s going on inside. I’m not speaking from theory or something I watched on a screen; I’m speaking from my own lived experience.

    Hi, I’m Hazel. I’m a first-year psychology student, but more importantly, I’m someone who’s had my own mental health journey too.
    I’ve always felt that media portrayals of mental health, especially DID, can be really inaccurate or even harmful. I’d much rather understand people’s real experiences than rely on stereotypes.
