This quote from William Frederick Halsey Jr. really stood out to me because in my family, certain people were judged as more important than others.
My dad always wanted to be an important person. He was a councilman who rose to the position of assistant mayor in our town, but the thing is he felt entitled to that importance.
My brother was the pride and joy in the family, and I was just the “crazy” one who would never be important to anyone.
My brother and my dad believed some people are just more important than others, and I was not one of them. My dream of being a writer was stupid in their eyes.
But they are no more important than me. They were just ordinary people who rose to a great challenge like this quote said, which would be great if they saw it in perspective. If they believed that they were no different than anyone else, but that’s not the case.
They feel they were just born better than everyone else. But my dreams, and the challenge I am trying to rise up to as a writer is just as important as being in politics, and for my brother, being a marine.
We all have a passion in life, a challenge to rise up to, a purpose. What makes a challenge or purpose more important than any other? Nothing.
My dad’s passion was politics, and my brother’s was the military. But does that make my passion any different?
This quote stood to me as a boost of my self-esteem. It showed that my dad and my brother were just ordinary people who rose to a challenge, and that is the same as me. They were born no better and no less than me. They just had different passions like each and every one of us.
