What’s a song that changed your life?
Runaway Train
When people talk about songs that changed their life, they usually talk about inspirational songs that give them meaning and a sense of hope. Mine is different. The song that has stayed with me for years is Runaway Train by Soul Asylum.
It is a song that expresses feelings and emotions that I can’t always put into words. It speaks of feeling lost, disconnected, and trapped in a never-ending cycle of despair.
I think about my life throughout the years, and much of it has felt just like that. I am having more and more good days and have found joy and meaning in my life, but whenever I hear that song, it reminds me that not all days are sunshine and rainbows. It gives me the words I desperately need when life feels overwhelming and I struggle to express how I am feeling.
I have a person in my life who listens to me no matter what mood I am in. Her love is not based on me being happy and having a smile on my face. I can be depressed, sad, anxious, and yes, even angry, and she never gets upset or treats me differently. She is patient and accepting of every part of who I am.
When I don’t have the words to describe my feelings, I use Runaway Train and its lyrics to help explain them. So, though it is a dark and sad song, it has changed my life by giving a voice to my pain. It has made a lasting impact on me, and whenever I hear it, I am reminded that darkness and pain are okay. I don’t have to hide them behind a smile, and I don’t have to pretend they aren’t there.
