What’s a moment in your life that made you feel truly alive?
The moment that made me feel truly alive did not come during a celebration, an achievement, or a joyful milestone. It came during one of the darkest periods of my life.
At the time, I was struggling with severe emotional pain, instability, and a profound sense of hopelessness. The effects of mental health challenges and traumatic experiences had left me feeling impulsive, self-destructive, and disconnected from the people around me. My relationships suffered, friendships rarely lasted, and I often felt invisible to my own family. Isolation became a constant companion, and eventually I reached a point where I could no longer see a future worth fighting for.
Everything changed when I found myself in the emergency room facing the consequences of that despair. In that moment, something unexpected happened. As doctors worked to help me, I realized that despite everything I had been through, I wanted to survive. I did not want my past to have the final say over my life. For the first time in a very long time, I felt a desire to keep going and discover what might still be possible for me.
What made that realization even more significant was that it came from within. There were no family members gathered at my bedside and no close friends waiting anxiously for updates. While that could have made me feel even more alone, it instead led me to discover something I had never fully possessed before: respect for myself and an understanding that my life had value simply because it was mine. I did not need someone else to prove I was worth saving. I finally understood that I was worth saving to myself.
When the doctors entered my room and told me I was out of danger, I felt something I had not felt in years. Relief washed over me, followed by gratitude. In that instant, I felt truly alive. The world looked different than it had before. I no longer viewed life as something I wanted to escape. I viewed it as something precious that I had nearly lost and was fortunate to still have.
Life has not been easy since then. I have experienced setbacks, disappointments, and difficult seasons. There are still times when life feels overwhelming. However, whenever I find myself slipping toward those dark thoughts, I remember that day. I remember the clarity that came from standing so close to losing everything. The memory reminds me that I want to be here, that my story is not finished, and that even the hardest chapters eventually pass.
That experience taught me that survival is not weakness. It is strength. I am a survivor, and I have a future ahead of me. No matter how difficult life becomes, I refuse to let myself sink as low as I once did. What made me feel truly alive was recognizing the value of my own life and choosing, from that moment forward, to keep living it with hope.
